Single herb capsules and extracts, so many to choose from!

Western Botanicals is a very reputable company. They test all of their herbs for purity and contaminates. Anything that comes in with problems is sent back. The herbs are always the best available, often organic and wild crafted.

You can rest assured that when you buy Western Botanicals you are getting the best herbs available. This goes for their whole product line. I have been using them along with Dr. Christopher’s for many years. If you enjoy using single herbs I know you will be impressed with the quality!

I looked in my cupboard to see how many single herbs I have and was amazed how many I have. They are very useful for healing and worth learning about and keeping on hand.

Here are a few that I use, just a small list to give you an idea of how wonderful single herbs can be. I have some in extract and some in capsules and I’ll let you know which ones I use, but they are both great to use. The links go to The Herbal Legacy website that is run by The School of Natural Healing.

Cayenne – I have both capsules and extract. This is a Dr. Christopher favorite and the one he feels turned around his heart problems. He liked to take the powder in water and I have done that from time to time, but I struggle with the hot in my mouth. I have the extract and will use it in an emergency, since it can immediately stop a heart attack and stroke. I use the capsules when mosquitos are out, if I am getting a migraine with those weird eye symptoms or if I’m cold.

Western Botanicals Dandelion
Dandelion – I use both capsules & extract, bulk is also available. Amazing herb! I used this back when I wat hit with arthritis and had gout in my feet. I wouldn’t wish gout on anyone, it is very painful. Dandelion helped to break up the uric acid crystals and make life bearable. Click here to read my arthritis story.

Ginger – love this one and use capsules, also available in extract. I would take it all throughout my period from right before it starts to the end and no cramping. I use it for travel and is the great for car/air sickness if taken beforehand. It really works and doesn’t make you all drowsy like the Dramamine does!

Western Botanicals Kava KavaKava Kava – I use capsules at night – 2 at bedtime, its relaxing and I don’t have problems with leg cramps or Charlie horses. I wake up feeling good in the morning. Available in bulk and extract as well.

Lobelia – I have extract. A lifesaver for people with lung/bronchial issues. I’ve woken up in the night with a heaviness in my chest and had the feeling I need to get up right now and take Lobelia. After taking it I’m able to cough up the phlegm and get back to sleep.

Black Walnut & Pau D’Arco – I have used both Black Walnut extract and Pau D'Arco extract  when I was doing the Candida program. It took me a good 9 months of being faithful to finally overcome that crazy situation. I feel so much better now and it is wonderful to not have those crazy sugar cravings and other awful candida symptoms!

Use the search box and the website and put in what you are looking for. It will give you the sizes and types. Some single herbs are available in syrup as well as capsules and extract, 2 oz & 4 oz. sizes. Capsules are bottles of 100 for the single herbs. Bulk is cut, powder and whole, 4, 8 & 16 oz. We are here to help you, give us a call to place an order or ask a question.

Ginger for travel, cramps and pain.

Western Botanicals Ginger Root capsules
Ginger has been a great herbal choice for me. I started using it for motion sickness about ten years ago. Before that I had used the common over-the-counter drugs, but found that they made me very drowsy. When I switched to Ginger, I found that it worked better than the drug without the drowsiness. My husband and I went on a cruise earlier this year. This was our first cruise and we had no idea how we were going to do and were quite worried. We took our ginger and were just fine on the plane, ship and on the tours. Great for people of all ages!

I used Ginger for menstrual cramps and found it to be much better than anything else I ever tried for cramps. Similar to travel sickness I found it best to start taking the Ginger before the cramps began. Then I could get through my whole period with no pain.

Ginger is safe, effective and affordable and comes in capsules, bulk powder, cut, and extract.

Buy Bulk Spices at Herbs First

We have many common spices such as Basil, Cinnamon, Cardomom, Cayenne, Dill Weed, Garlic, Ginger, Thyme, Turmeric and more. At Herbs First you can get a much larger size for the same money as the tiny bottles at the store. Be sure to get your spices from us!

For smoothies we have some great ingredients to add such as Alfalfa, Barley Grass, Beet Powder, Spirulina, Spinach, Wheat Grass, Ginkgo, Siberian Ginseng and more. If you go to one of the soothie stores you will see them open up capsules and pour in the powder.  At Herbs First you can purchase it in bulk and save money.

Gluten free cooking will call for ingredients such as Agar Agar, Arrowroot Powder and Guar Gum.  These are not easy to find in the store.  I have found Guar Gum to be a great thickener, very little is needed to thicken liquids.  I have made some practically zero calorie syrup using flavored stevia as the flavoring and sweetener in water thickened with Guar Gum. Syrups like this are very costly when you buy them.  Make them at home for pennies and in minutes.

Sugar Free Zero Calorie Syrup

1 cup of water,
desired flavored stevia such as English Toffee, 1 to 2 squirts
Combine liquids and heat it up on the stove.
Whisk in about ¼ teaspoon  Guar Gum at a time until you get the desired consistency, which is usually ½ teaspoon.
The Guar Gum does not change the flavor and has 10 calories per teaspoon.
Great on pancakes, waffles, french toast and more.
Refrigerate and use in a week.

Nutritional Yeast is listed as an ingredient in many recipes.  It adds a nutty or cheesy flavor. It is a source of protein and vitamins, especially the B vitamins. I have used this in salad dressings, casseroles etc.

We have just about anything a person would want in the bulk herbs and spice section.  Take time to scroll through the pages, I’m sure you will find many things that you have been looking for.

Have a great month!

Spices that are Herbs for Healing

I enjoy the fact that so many spices we use in our kitchen are also amazing healing herbs.  We have many of these spice-herbs available in essential oils, vegicaps, extracts and bulk, making them easy to use for everyone.

Celery Seed is a natural diuretic, that can reduce excess water buildup and decrease the uric acid that causes pain and inflammation in gout and arthritis. Available in essential oil, vegicaps, extract and bulk.

Cinnamon, a favorite in cooking and amazing as an herb.  Cholesterol reducer, pain reliever, diabetes treatment, weight loss, yeast infection fighter and more.  Who knew that this little spice could do so much?  Available in essential oil, vegicaps, extract and bulk.

Clove is an aromatic spice that does wonders as an herb.  Used in parasite cleanses, for digestive problems, toothaches, insect bites, as a bug repellant, for rheumatoid arthritis, etc.  Available in essential oil, vegicaps, extract and bulk.

Cumin is a great source of iron and calcium and has been shown to lower blood sugar levels, has antibacterical properties, and used for digestive problems and gas. Available in bulk powder and whole seed.

Fennel helps digestion and relieves indigestion, gas, dyspepsia and colic, as well as reducing intestinal spasms. Available in essential oil, vegicaps, extract and bulk as well as in the The Garden Essence oil blend Digestion.

Garlic, known to all as the herbal antibiotic, used anciently in both healing and nutrition. Used as a nerve tonic, lowering hypertension, equalizer of blood circulation, and helpful for respiratory infections.  Available in vegicaps, extract and bulk as well as in Dr. Christopher’s Super Garlic Immune Formula and Western Botanicals Anti-Plague formula in vegicaps and syrup.

Ginger is one that I have used for motion sickness. When taken before the trip and I always do fine in the car or on the plane.  Use Ginger at the onset of your period, it is incredible for keeping the cramping at a minimum.  Ginger is available in essential oil, vegicaps, extract and bulk.

You can purchase single herbs as well as many herbal formulas at Herbs First.

Health Care Reform Starts At Home

It is interesting to follow the progress on the health care reform bill that is taking place in the United States and people’s differing ideas on what needs to happen to make it all work. One of the issues is the fact that the new plan won’t cover everyone, and partly the reason is that is that not everyone wants to be covered! One big issue that isn’t being discussed is that many health problems are diet related. We have the best health care available in the world, but people aren’t eating right so we are the unhealthiest nation in the world. Sad news. More and more people are understanding that diet is the culprit and making diet changes that will change their lives for the better.

The past few months I have been reaching for a bottle of ginger capsules. I’ve been amazed at what this little herb/spice can do for me. The other day as I was waking up I realized that I had a symptom of a migraine coming on. I took some ginger and the symptom went away. Last month I took ginger a few hours before getting on an airplane and noticed for the first time ever that I didn’t fall asleep on the plane and didn’t have the jet lag at the end of the trip. I have taken ginger quite a few times when I feel like a deadhead and it gets my brain out of the fog and gives me energy for the rest of the day. When I know we are going to be driving on a windy road I take ginger before we go and don’t get nauseous. Ginger worked wonders for my dog on our road trips, I was amazed at how the ginger kept her tummy happy on a 12 hour trip.

I read through quite a few of the articles available on the Herbal Legacy website and it talks about Ginger helping with inflammation in arthritis, being better than the NSAID drugs. Ginger regulates blood sugar, is an effective blood thinner preventing strokes, lowers serum cholesterol, increases sperm motility, promotes the production of saliva which is great for people with dry mouth syndrome. Ginger eases the pains of gas and cramping as well as menstrual cramps. The list goes on, put ginger in the search at Herbal Legacy to read more uses of ginger.

I like to take responsibility for my family’s health and we have done a pretty good job of it over the years. It will never cease to amaze me how wonderful herbs are. For any given health problem I can reach in my own cupboard for the solution and get almost immediate results using the herbs of my choice. I don’t have to worry about any side effects because herbs really do what they say they do, and that is the effect we all deserve! I don't need any health care reform, I think I'm doing just fine!

Suzy’s First Road Trip

We have had our dog Suzy for almost three years, yet never had the opportunity to take her on a road trip. Besides going to the vet she was only in the car on one other occasion to see how she would do, and she threw up that time. My sister called on Sunday Sept 13th to let me know that my Dad was not able to move and was taken to the ER by ambulance. They found that he had an infection, gave him some antibiotics and released him. The next day my step mother ended up getting him back to the ER because he was much worse and he was admitted to the hospital. By the evening of the 14th things were not looking good and my husband and I decided that we had better

head up to be with him.

On Tuesday I bought a harness for Suzy to keep her safe in the seat. My husband Don tried to get her fitted and ready for the trip and she would have nothing to do with it. He tried to talk me out of taking her, but I just couldn’t leave her at home when I didn’t know how long we were going to be gone. I told him I would give her herbs and she would be fine. So very early on the 16th I gave her a Ginger capsule for the nausea and a Relax-Eze capsule for the hyperness. I could not believe how great she was, usually she would jump from seat to seat, but most of the trip she just slept on the floor, occasionally looking out the window. The trip took 12 1/2 hours to get there due to traffic problems and was a joy the whole way.

We ended up staying until the morning of the 26th, my Dad was released to a Rehabilitation Center on the 23rd which amazed me because I really thought he wasn’t going to make it. During most of our time in Washington we worked on fixing up his house so that it can be sold and move into something smaller. We worked very hard for about 12 hours a day and all I can say is thank goodness for Kava Kava. Both my husband and I have issues with our back & neck when we overwork. We took the Kava Kava at night and woke up in the morning with no stiff muscles. We also added Spirulina to our regular herbs that we take, Spirulina is a great super

food and has always given me energy.

On the 26th we went over to the rehabilitation center to say goodbye to my Dad. Don was going to keep Suzy outside while I went in for a minute. Suzy bolted for the door and ran in, so I asked if it was ok for her to be there and they said yes. We ran her down to my Dad’s room and he was quite happy to see her. On the way out I remembered that I had forgotten to give Suzy her herbs. They had some food on trays, so I put a small amount of scrambled eggs into a napkin to put the capsules in. She would not eat them, Don sniffed the eggs and said they smelled powdered. I went back into the center and got a packet of margarine and dipped the capsules in that. Suzy still would have nothing to do with it, she knows real butter from the imitation. Don ended up pushing them down her throat and holding her mouth closed until she swallowed. We headed back to Utah. Suzy was a bit hyper for about 15 minutes until the capsules took effect and was again docile for the entire trip.

Thank you for your patience while I was gone. I am now able to take phone orders at 801-701-9923.

Food Poisoning

We had a family reunion and were the second group to arrive at the beach house that we had rented. My brother and family arrived there first and I saw his whole family, but he was nowhere to be found. I asked his wife where he was and she told me that three days earlier he had eaten at the famous “Golden Arches” restaurant and gotten very sick within 20 minutes of eating his food. For three days he had tried over the counter drugs for nausea and diarrhea but was still feeling terrible. I told her that I thought I had something that would help and went to my handy bag of herbs. I had Slippery Elm which is great for diarrhea, and Ginger which works well for nausea. I gave her the little packets which hold about 25 capsules and said that I would take the Slippery Elm every half hour until I was feeling better and Ginger every 2 - 3 hours. My brother showed his face a few hours later and said that he was feeling much better and was fine the rest of the week long reunion.

Food poisoning is most commonly a reaction to toxins produced by bacteria or other toxins. Bacteria thrive in food that is not prepared hygienically, that is kept out of refrigeration for too long, or that is not thoroughly cooked. Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach cramps, and generally start 4 - 36 hours after eating contaminated food and often can last several days to two weeks. The reaction is so similar to the flu that it is often mistaken for the flu.

Slippery Elm is the herb of choice for any gastrointestinal disturbances including food poisoning. It is very calming and soothing to the intestinal tract and will often stop the diarrhea with a few doses. I have used it when I have been emotionally upset which often causes an acidic condition in the body which manifests itself with heart burn all the way through my system and ending in burning diarrhea. I mix the powder in with water and take it every half hour and within a few hours I will be back to normal. The capsules are great for trips and came in handy for my brother.

Slippery Elm has saved many people’s lives and brought them back to good health. My favorite story is on the Herbal Legacy website called Elijah, a story of hope and progress. Dr. Christopher’s well-known poultices for abscesses, boils and gangrene use Slippery Elm paste as a main ingredient. Slippery Elm is the herb that was used to heal the hip of a young pioneer boy when he received a musket blast at the Hauns Mill Massacre. His mother was instructed through the spirit how to heal him. He laid on his stomach for five weeks until he was entirely recovered, a flexible gristle having grown in place of the missing joint and socket.

Ginger helps to stomach pain, cramps and indigestion. Ginger protects while stimulating, treats constipation and diarrhea while relieving nausea, inhibits toxic bacteria while promoting friendly species of bacteria. Ginger has been found to work better than the popular over the counter drugs for motion sickness. I also use it for menstrual cramps and it is found in many herbal formulas. Dr. Christopher said, “Ginger is generally combined with herbs going into the abdominal area, because it is a carrier. Ginger is an herb which accentuates so many herbs.”

Two simple herbs made a happy vacation for my brother. You can purchase these herbs and others at Herbs First.
