Three Anti-Viral Herbs

We now have index pages to all of the products on the Herbs First home page. Click on the icons on the home page to access the index. We hope you enjoy the bulk herb index which will make it easy to find the herbs you need to order.

Astragalus root, is a powerful antiviral herb that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Its main use is to boost the body’s immune system making it useful in fighting the common cold and the flu. This is a mild tasting herb and the powder could easily be added to a smoothie or even in water for easy ingestion. Available in bulk, extract and capsules.

Elder Berry has a history of fighting infections including influenza, herpes, viral infections and bacterial infections. Use it to make a great tasting extract that everyone in your family will love. Extracts are easy to make and alcohol extracts last indefinitely if stored in a cool dark place. Available in bulk, extract and capsules.

Echinacea is one of the top-selling herbs of all time because it is beneficial for immune support and overall health. The phytochemicals in echinacea reduce viral infections.  Echinacea inhibits bacteria and viruses from penetrating healthy cells, which reduces the chance of contracting infections. I like to make a glycerine extract making it kid-friendly and easy for everyone in the family to ingest. I always have Echinacea on hand. Available in bulk, extract and capsules.

What do I do with this bulk herb I just bought?

I get emails from people saying, “ I just bought (fill in the blank) bulk herb, what do I do with it?” Using bulk herbs is a great way to save money, but it is a good idea to know how you are going to use bulk herbs before you purchase them. Here are some of the ways that I use bulk herbs.

capsulizing herbs    Powdered herbs are easy to capsulize and you can save the most money capsulizing single herbs.  Sixteen ounces of powder will fill about 1500 “0” sized capsules. I find that the “00” are easier for me to hold and get into the little capsule machine. A pound of powder will fill about 1000 “00” capsules. In the photo I have just capsulized twenty-four Kava Kava. I like to keep Kava Kava in my night stand, it is a great one for relaxing to get to sleep, especially helpful when my muscles are sore.

Add herbs to juice    Another way I use powdered herbs is mixed in with my Jurassic Green. To my fresh squeezed orange juice, I add Maca Root which contains over 55 naturally occurring, beneficial phyto-chemicals including important hormonal precursors and sterols. It is a mood and energy level booster and great for both men and women. Acai is a little purple berry packed full of antioxidants, amino acids and Omega essential fatty acids. Its antioxidant levels outranks nearly every other food on the planet, including; pomegranates, blueberries, and goji berries and sure helps the taste of my concoction. Ginkgo is good for mental function and blood circulation. Calc Tea is Herbal Calcium, I buy the mix your own formula and mix them all together and re-bag and remark the mylar bag the herbs come in. The mix your own formula kit is a great way to get your Herbal Calcium - one kit will make 3.5 lbs of powder which lasts my husband and I six months.  My morning drink tastes fine to me and it is a great way to get more nutrition into my body.

making extracts    Making a single herb extract is easy and something that I do quite often. Alcohol is the best way to preserve the medicinal value of the herbs and the extracts stay good for many years. Pictured I have Black Walnut and Pau D’Arco that I had left over from my Candida Cleanse a while back. Black Walnut is an herb Dr. Christopher recommends for people that have problems with fungus or tumors and cysts. Black Walnut is high in potassium and people get tumors and cysts when they are low in potassium. Pau D’Arco kills bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites. Green Tea is a powerful anti-oxidant that inhibits the growth of cancer cells, and kills cancer cells without harming healthy tissue. The last one is the Elderberry extract, Elderberry is a well known immune booster, flu and virus fighter, as well as being high in potassium. Now would be a perfect time to get Elderberry going to have some ready for winter!

To make an alcohol extract use 16 oz. of Vodka per 4 oz. of dried herb. Put it in a glass jar with a lid and shake it three times a day for 2 weeks. I cover it with a towel to keep the light out. Strain it and put it in a glass jar, marking what it is and when you made it. It will be good for many years, indefinitely if kept in a cool dark place. We have empty amber bottles available 1 oz. 2 oz, 4 oz, 8 oz and 16 oz. sizes very reasonably priced.

tea press    Another way to use bulk cut herbs is to make a tea. Add a teaspoon of bulk herb of choice to a cup of water. Boil the water and then pour it over the herbs. Steep for ten to fifteen minutes, strain, sweeten if desired. I got this great little french press for Christmas one year and love it. It makes 4 cups of tea, the plunger is up when making the tea and then push it down to keep the herb from getting into the tea. Love it and you can buy one just about anywhere!

Bulk herbs are 5% off for August, there is very little mark-up in bulk herbs, so 5% off is a big deal! We have so many bulk herbs it takes 22 web pages to list them all. Many herbs are available in both cut and powder, 4 oz, 8 oz and 16 oz sizes. They come in reclosable mylar bags.

How to use bulk herbs

I will get an emails from people saying, “ I just bought (fill in the blank) bulk herb, what do I do with it?” Using bulk herbs is a great way to save money, and it is a good idea to know how you are going to use bulk herbs before you purchase them. Here are some of the ways that I use bulk herbs.

capsulizing herbsPowdered herbs are easy to capsulize and you can save the most money capsulizing single herbs. Compare the cost of the bulk herb and empty capsules to the cost of buying 15 bottles of capsulized herbs. Sixteen ounces of powder will fill about 1000 “00” capsules or about 1500 “0” sized capsules. I find that the “00” are easier for me to hold and get into the little capsule machine. The smaller size just frustrates me and isn’t worth it and I don’t mind swallowing the larger sized capsule. In the photo I have just capsulized twenty-four Kava Kava. I like to buy a bottle of the prepared herbs so that I have a bottle to put them in. I like to keep Kava Kava in my night stand, it is a great one for relaxing to get to sleep, especially helpful when my muscles are sore.

Add herbs to juiceAnother way I use the powdered herbs is added in with my Jurassic Green. We use fresh squeezed orange juice, I add Maca Root which contains over 55 naturally occurring, beneficial phyto-chemicals including important hormonal precursors and sterols. The mix your own formula kit is a great way to get your Herbal Calcium - one kit will make 3.5 lbs of powder which lasts my husband and I six months. With the sale on the bulk herbs that makes this it $55.05 this month. I had a bone density test last year and for my age my bones were above the level of most people my age. I feel that is due to the fact that I am getting the type of calcium that my body can use. My morning drink tastes ok to me and it is a great way to get more nutrition into my body.

making extractsQuite often people that buy the single herb extracts will ask me how to make extracts because they are using so much that the cost is getting prohibitive. Making a single herb extract is easy and something that I do quite often. In fact a few weeks ago I was in the middle of making four different alcohol extracts and had so much Vodka sitting out on my counter that my family had thought I had lost my mind! Alcohol is the best way to preserve the medicinal value of the herbs and the extracts stay good for many years. Pictured I have Black Walnut and Pau D’Arco that I had left over from my Candida Cleanse. I had bought it for weight-loss, but never used it, so made the extract to have on hand. The last one is the Elderberry extract, I talked about this one at the beginning of the winter. Elderberry is a well known immune booster, flu and virus fighter, as well as being high in potassium.

To make an alcohol extract use 16 oz. of Vodka per 4 oz. of dried herb. Put it in a glass jar with a lid and shake it three times a day for 2 weeks. I cover it with a towel to keep the light out. Yes, we have bulk herbs!

I was talking to a customer and she said that she wished we had bulk herbs. I thought she was joking because we have a very large supply of bulk single herbs. So if you aren’t aware, we have bulk herbs in cut and powder, in 4 oz., 8 oz and 16 oz sizes. The bulk herbs are either Organic or Wild crafted, so you know they are the best you can get. I love that they come in a resealable mylar bag, which makes it so easy to use. The best part is they are on sale this month, a little sale, because there is not much markup in single bulk herbs, save 5% through February 26th.

When my Dad passed away he had a lot of supplements, so I boxed them up and brought them home to see if there was anything usable. I picked up a bottle of "x" brand immune booster formula and looked at the ingredients and couldn’t believe my eyes! This formula consisted of rice bran and Shiitake Mushroom. First off I couldn’t imagine what use the rice bran had other than a filler when I noticed that there was a list of “other ingredients” such as corn starch which is used as a thickener, microcrystalline cellulose which is wood pulp, sucrose fatty acid ester an emulsifier and titanium dioxide a colorant. All of this stuff is FDA approved for food use, but why would you add “fillers” to an herbal product? I'm wondering how much Shiitake Mushroom was really in there, this product has more fillers than herbs! This formula is going right into the garbage.

Dr. Christopher’s Original Formulas and Western Botancials formulas are pure organic or wild crafted herbs. Pure herbs, no fillers, just herbs for your health and healing. Some herbal companies are making “standardized” herbs, but Dr. Christopher taught people to use the whole herb for the best healing and safety. “Standardization” makes herbs more like a drug. The School of Natural Healing favors non-standardized extracts, as you will receive the benefit from the whole plant, not just the chemicals that man has decided are the most beneficial.

We hope you will enjoy getting to know the great herbal formulas that we have available at Herbs First. We will be happy to assist you in placing your order. The order lines are open between 9:00 am to 3:00 pm Mountain Time, 801-228-1901.

Save Money Using Bulk Single Herbs

Bulk single herbs are 10% off for the rest of the month and you might be thinking, big deal, what kind of a sale is that? The first thing you have to know is that there is very little markup on the bulk herbs, so an extra 10% helps. The second thing is that these are of the best quality that you are going to find on the market. Western Botanicals asks us not to list if they are organic or wild crafted, because the availability changes from time to time. Overall, most of the bulk herbs are organic. If organic is not available then they get the next best thing which is wild crafted which is just about as good as organic. We have had excellent feedback from customers concerning the quality of the bulk herbs, so you know you are getting the best that you can for the money.

About 90% of the herbs that we sell are the prepared herbs and for most people that is what they want. But for people that really want/need to save money, buying bulk herbs and making your own herbal preparations can really save you a lot of money. Bulk herbs can be used to make your own formulas, extracts, ointments, oils, teas, fomentations and more. If you have a favorite tea you like to drink that is a single herb, buy it in bulk and save because you pay a lot for those little tea bags.

I was taking an order recently and the customer wanted the Super Garlic Immune Formula and they mentioned that they had a friend that was recommending it. I asked if she had ever tasted it because it is about the worst tasting thing I have ever eaten. It gets better over time though, I can take it down without much problem, but I worry about people getting it and not knowing beforehand. Then she asked if it is available in capsules, w

hich it is, from Western Botanicals as Anti Plague. She said that her friend just gets the dry ingredients and makes her own capsules. I thought that was a great idea, so on the Mix Your Own Formula page I have added an Anti-Plague kit in powder form adding the Garlic Powder to make it complete. Buy one of each item, mix them together and you

have saved a lot of money to get a great formula for colds, flu, virus and over all immune support.

You can capsulize about 1500 ‘0’ capsules or 1000 ‘00’ capsules out of a pound of powdered herbs. The Anti-Plague kit makes three pounds of powder, so to compare with Western Botanicals bottled Anti Plague you would spend $65.58 for 3 lbs. of powder and $99.75 for 5000 ‘0’ vegicaps for a total of $165.33 and a good amount of work you could make the equivalent of about 38 prepared bottles of Anti-Plague capsules that would cost $566.96 plus shipping. If you decided to do this, you really need to capsulize them right away, because that keeps them from oxydizing and they should be fine if you use them in 5 to 10 years stored in a cool dry place. We have a great little capsule machine and I find that it works better with the vegicaps.

In the cup I have

my fresh squeezed orange juice, Jurassic Green, Maca Root, Ginkgo, Herbal Calcium and Acai Berry powder that I mix with a great stick blender. This is what I drink every morning. I recently added the Maca Root which I learned is an adaptogen that regulates and supports endocrine health. Maca helps the metabolism, energy levels, growth, sexual development and the sense of well being and attitude. Ginkgo helps brain function. Acai Berry is high in antioxidants to keep the immune system strong. The Herbal Calcium is from the Mix Your Own Formula as Calc Tea page, which makes 3.5 lbs of powder that will last my husband and I about six months for a cost of $48.00.

The Herbal Preparations and Natural Therapies DVD & book is a great way to learn how to make your own herbal products. I have a great sense of accomplishment when I able able to make some of the herbals that my family uses. I wish I had this when I started making my own

preparations, it is great to be able to step by step learn from the DVD vs. reading just from a book and trying to figure out what they are talking about. This set would be a great gift item for the coming holidays.
