Are bug bites bugging you?

Dr Christopher Stings and Bites OintmentThere are several great remedies available to help with bug bites and I have used all of them at one time or another. Plantain Ointment/Stings & Bites is a Dr. Christopher favorite. If you know what the plant looks like and you are having an issue with a bug bite, you can just pick some of the leaves, chew them and place them on the bite. It works well to draw out the poison that is causing the itching. Plantain is commonly seen in grassy areas. Learn what it looks like, it might come in handy someday! Note that we have a few jars of the old label Stings & Bites and then after that it will be back to Plantain Ointment.

Garden Essence Oils lavenderLavender essential oil is a well-known favorite for many  people and I find that it works well for mosquito bites and bee stings. I was recently stung by a bee and it really hurt. I put the Garden Essence Lavender oil on the area and it didn’t swell and the pain went away. Lavender is a great summer remedy for sunburn as well, making it a must have for every household.

Dr Christopher Black OintmentI recently had some mosquito bites that weren’t responding to the Plantain Ointment or Lavender oil. I was asking friends for some other ideas because the bites were very bothersome. One of them came up with Dr. Christopher's Black Ointment so I decided to give it a try and it worked! Sweet relief!

Garden Essence Pest AwayAnother essential oil that works on bites is one that helps deter them. I will add a few drops of Garden Essence Pest Away blend to lotion and put it on my exposed areas and it works pretty well at keeping them away. I’ve also used it directly on the bites and had them stop itching.

So there you have it, some great natural remedies to help you with this pesky problem!

Do It Yourself, Insect Repellant Spray and Sunburn Spray

Garden Essence Oils, Pest-Away    I woke up in the middle of the night with an itch and realized it is bug bite season! In the morning I was able to rub my trusty roller bottle of Pest Away on it and that took care of the itch. I have put it on a throughout the day and the bump is going down. Pest Away is a nice little oil blend to have around.

To make a great insect repellant spray fill a bottle ½ with distilled water, the other ½ with vodka. Add 10 drops of Pest Away per ounce – the 1 oz. spray bottle will take 10 drops of Pest Away, the 4 oz. spray bottle will need 40 drops. This makes a great all-natural insect spray repellant. Spray liberally as needed.

Make a roller bottle filled with fractionated coconut oil and 10 drops of Pest Away. Use it on the bites to help the itch and bump go away. Buy the spray bottles and roller bottles at this link.

I use coconut oil on my body and it is has natural sun screen properties. If I end up getting slightly burned I rub more oil on my skin it tends to take the burn turn to a tan overnight. I don’t rely solely on this if I am going out swimming, but it works fine for just puttering around the yard and going on walks.

For a great sun burn spray mostly fill the 4 oz. spray bottle with Aloe Vera Gel, then add 15 drops Lavender Oil, 5 drops Peppermint oil, and open a vitamin E gel cap and drop in the oil.  Shake it up and leave it in the refrigerator. The coldness will help cool the burn, as will the Peppermint, and the Lavender is very healing. Use liberally!
