Do It Yourself Summer Remedies

Make your own Summer Remedy Kit and be ready for bites, burns, scrapes, poison ivy, and bugs. It is always nice to be prepared!

Empty 1 oz. roller bottleSunburn Relief

45 drops Lavender
30 drops Myrrh
Fractionated coconut oil
1 oz. Roller Bottle

Add essential oils to roller bottle and top off bottle with your choice of carrier oil. I like liquid (fractionated) coconut oil for its long shelf life.

Apply topically as needed. Lavender heals burns - sunburn included and analgesic properties to help relieve the pain of sunburn. Myrrh is considered a "liquid band-aide" and is a superior healer of skin tissue. For severe burns seek medical attention and consider using this remedy in a spray bottle to avoid painful touch.

Do It Yourself, Insect Repellant Spray and Sunburn Spray

Garden Essence Oils, Pest-Away    I woke up in the middle of the night with an itch and realized it is bug bite season! In the morning I was able to rub my trusty roller bottle of Pest Away on it and that took care of the itch. I have put it on a throughout the day and the bump is going down. Pest Away is a nice little oil blend to have around.

To make a great insect repellant spray fill a bottle ½ with distilled water, the other ½ with vodka. Add 10 drops of Pest Away per ounce – the 1 oz. spray bottle will take 10 drops of Pest Away, the 4 oz. spray bottle will need 40 drops. This makes a great all-natural insect spray repellant. Spray liberally as needed.

Make a roller bottle filled with fractionated coconut oil and 10 drops of Pest Away. Use it on the bites to help the itch and bump go away. Buy the spray bottles and roller bottles at this link.

I use coconut oil on my body and it is has natural sun screen properties. If I end up getting slightly burned I rub more oil on my skin it tends to take the burn turn to a tan overnight. I don’t rely solely on this if I am going out swimming, but it works fine for just puttering around the yard and going on walks.

For a great sun burn spray mostly fill the 4 oz. spray bottle with Aloe Vera Gel, then add 15 drops Lavender Oil, 5 drops Peppermint oil, and open a vitamin E gel cap and drop in the oil.  Shake it up and leave it in the refrigerator. The coldness will help cool the burn, as will the Peppermint, and the Lavender is very healing. Use liberally!

Do it yourself - Bug Repellant Spray and Sunburn Relief Spray

Many times we have been at outdoor events and gotten the over spray from people using bug repellant.  I find that so inconsiderate!  You would think they would do it before they came, but no, time after time people are spraying their obnoxious sprays all over everyone.  Commercial sprays smell nasty and are not healthy to inhale, much less have soaking into your skin.

It is easy to make your own Deet free - chemical free bug repellant. There are two things you need to make a great bug repellant.

Bug Repellant

    4 oz. Vodka
1 teaspoon Garden Essence Essential Oils Pest-Away with Catnip (5 ml.)

Put Vodka and Pest Away with Catnip in 4 oz. spray bottle and shake.  Spray on exposed skin and in hair several times a day to keep the bugs away.

Sunburn Relief Spray

    2 oz. Aloe Vera Gel
    2 oz. Distilled Water
15 drops Garden Essence Lavender Essential Oil
15 drops Garden Essence Tea Tree Essential Oil
10 drops Garden Essence Peppermint Essential Oil

Amber Spray BottleMix all ingredients in a 4 oz. glass spray bottle.  Spray liberally as often as desired on sunburned skin.  Keep the left over solution in the refrigerator.

Herbs First now has 1 oz and 4 oz glass spray bottles  to use with your own herbal and essential oil formulations.

As a natural sunscreen I like to use Coconut Oil, I put it on several times throughout the day.  Sometimes I slightly burn, so I just put more coconut oil on and by morning it has turned into a tan.  Complete Tissue and Bone Ointment is a great sunburn oil, if you don't mind being oily! I would use it if I had a really bad burn.  Order it here.

    Enjoy your summer!
